February 17, 2017 02:53 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team closes the regular indoor season on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Penn State Tune-Up in University Park, Pennsylvania, at noon ET.
Saturday’s meet will serve as one last opportunity for select Mountaineers to secure their place at the Big 12 Championship on Feb. 24-25. Events will begin at noon ET at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track and Field. Fans can follow live results at gopsusports.com/livestats.com.
“This is a simple little trip over to Penn State to provide an opportunity for a few kids prior to the Big 12 Championship,” said coach Sean Cleary. “Nothing more than a little tune-up before we head to Ames, Iowa.”
Six teams will join West Virginia and Penn State at the event on Saturday – Keystone College, Mansfield, Marietta, Point Park University, Towson and UMBC.
This is the second time this season the Mountaineers will make a trip to Penn State as they previously trekked to University Park for the PSU National Open on Jan. 27-28.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers split in a pair of meets as select members competed at the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, West Virginia, and three individuals traveled to the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington. At the Marshall Invitational, WVU earned a trio of victories as well as a runner-up finish.
West Virginia’s first win came on Friday from junior Sara Finfrock in the women’s pole vault as she marked an indoor career best of 3.80 meters. WVU’s second win came from junior Shamoya McNeil in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 12.62 meters. Sophomore Danique Bryan grabbed WVU’s third win of the weekend in the women’s long jump, leaping 5.92 meters.
Junior Bria Welker notched a runner-up finish in the women’s 400 meters, crossing the finish line in an indoor career-best 56.78, just .56 second away from winning the race. Welker shed .54 seconds off of her previous best time, set at this year’s Akron Invitational.
At the Husky Classic, redshirt juniors Jillian Forsey and Maggie Drazba and redshirt freshman Candace Jones represented the Mountaineers. In the women’s 5,000 meters, Forsey crossed the finish line in 15th with a time of 16:14.76 and Drazba placed 39th with a time of 16:53.89. Jones raced in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 30th with a time of 2:12.76.
West Virginia will travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete for a Big 12 title at the 2017 Big 12 Indoor Championship on Feb. 24-25. Iowa State will host the championship inside the Lied Recreation Center.
