"The team is really looking forward to racing this weekend," WVU coach
Sean Cleary said. "We have run a little better each of our last three races, and we believe that we have one more progression in us. I feel very confident that we will run our best race of the year."
Friday's field consists of 28 teams, as the top-two team finishers receive automatic bids into the 2017 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which commences on Nov. 18, in Louisville, Kentucky.
A total of 31 teams advance to the NCAA Championships, with 18 automatic bids (top-two teams in each of the nine regions) and 13 at-large bids up for grabs.
Additionally, a total of 38 individual runners are selected to compete at nationals following team qualifications. The top-four finishers at each regional from non-qualifying teams receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, as long as they finished in the top 25 at the regional meet. Two at-large bids for remaining runners in a national pool of top-25 regional finishers also will be selected.
Five teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region were represented in the most recent USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll, which was released on Oct. 31, including No. 9 Villanova, No. 19 Penn State and No. 27 Georgetown. West Virginia and Princeton each received votes in the poll.
In the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, WVU sits fourth, behind No. 1 Villanova, No. 2 Penn State and No. 3 Georgetown. No. 5 Princeton rounds out the top five.
Friday marks the second time WVU will compete at Lehigh this season. The team opened the regular season with a win at the Lehigh Invitational on Sept. 1. Redshirt senior
Maggie Drazba earned her first career victory at the meet, earning a 6k time of 20:58.6.
WVU finished fourth at the Mid-Atlantic Regional last season in University Park, Pennsylvania. A trio of Mountaineers, including redshirt seniors
Jillian Forsey (second), Drazba (11th) and
Amy Cashin (22nd), earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region status for their top-25 finishes. The Mountaineers earned 112 points, finishing behind Penn State (36), Villanova (93) and Penn (99).
WVU last competed at the 2017 Big 12 Championship on Oct. 28, in Round Rock, Texas. The Mountaineers finished in fourth place as a team, with Drazba and Cashin earning All-Big 12 honors.
Drazba placed sixth overall in a 6k time of 20:19.1, while Cashin finished 13th, crossing the finish line in 20:44.0. The duo's accomplishments marked the first time WVU has had multiple all-conference performers in the same season since 2014.
