MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Matthew Sharpstene and senior Avery Schneider sit in the top 25 after two rounds of play at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational at the Royal Ka'anapali Course in Lahaina, Hawaii, on Saturday.
West Virginia slipped to 13th overall as a team after shooting a 303 in the round. The Mountaineers sit at 274-303=577 for nine over par. No. 12 LSU has moved into the top spot on the team leaderboard at 25 under par (543), followed by No. 25 Cal in second at 22 under (546). South Carolina is third at 21 under (547).
"Obviously, it was a rough day for us and several other teams," WVU coach Sean Covich said. "We didn't do a good job of adjusting to the high winds today. Everything gets magnified in high winds, but really good teams learn to adjust their game plan and accept what the course is giving you that particular day. We need to do a better job in several areas tomorrow because the winds will be severe again."
Sharpstene is tied for 21st place through 36 holes. After carding a career-low 67 in the first round, he shot one-over par with a 72 in the second. His scorecard shows a total of 139 for three-under par with one round remaining.
"I'm proud of freshman Matthew Sharpstene," Covich said. "To have a 72 out of him was impressive. He's come a long way with his shot selection out there. I can't say enough about his potential."
Schneider shot three-over par with a 74 across Saturday's 18 holes. He carded a score of 66-74=140 and is two under par in the tournament. Schneider is currently tied for 23rd place.
Playing as an individual, Philipp Matlari sits four over and in 61st place. He shot 72-74-146 over two days of play.
Etienne Papineau's scorecard shows 68-79=147 through two rounds of action. He is five-over par in tied for 68th place heading into the final day of play.
Max Sear is 97th overall with a two-round score of 74-78=152. He sits 10-over par. Tristan Nicholls is two strokes behind Sear at 12 over. He's tied at 102 with a score of 73-81=154.
WVU will tee off in a shotgun start at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday for the final 18 holes. The Mountaineers are paired with Loyola-Marymount, Bowling Green and Gonzaga.
