MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University novice rowing team begins its fall season at the 33rd Annual Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Fairfax Station, Virginia.
The Head of the Occoquan is hosted by the Occoquan Boat Club, and will be held at Sandy Run Regional Park. The regatta marks the first intercollegiate competition for 15 student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 15.
"Everyone is excited for this first race," assistant coach Tina Griffith said. "The girls are very athletic this year and we are looking forward to seeing how well they can apply that strength in a competition."
WVU begins the regatta with three boats competing in the Women's Collegiate Novice 4+ event. The boats are slated to launch at 11:50 a.m. ET. Following the 4+ event, one WVU boat will compete in the women's 8+, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
In last year's Head of the Occoquan, the Mountaineers' novice 4+ 'A' boat paced the field of 22 to secure a victory. West Virginia's 4+ 'B' crew finished in fourth. Additionally, WVU's 'A' and 'B' boat finished No. 3 and No. 10, respectively, in the women's 8+ race.
The varsity and novice teams will be back in action on Nov. 11, when the Mountaineers race Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to wrap up the fall season. The race marks the second meeting between the Dukes and Mountaineers this fall. The varsity team has been off since it competed against Robert Morris on Oct. 21, in Morgantown.
