MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University women's tennis team opened play with two victories in singles and doubles victories at the Louisville Tennis Classic in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday.
WVU opened the day with a doubles match against Michigan State, where the Mountaineers claimed a victory in one of the three matches against the Spartans. On the No. 3 court, freshman
Anne-Sophie Courteau and senior
Lyn Yuen Choo bested MSU's Sara Kauuttila and Ava Thielman, 6-2. At No. 1, the Spartans' Emily Metcalf and Davina Nguyen defeated
Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran, 6-4. WVU's
Paula Goetz and
Giovanna Caputo fell to Habiba Shaker and Lexi Baylis, 6-3, at No. 2.
West Virginia continued doubles play with a match against Ball State, where the Mountaineers won one of the three matches against the Cardinals. On court No. 1, Jordan and Duran topped Peyton Gollhofer and Julia Sbircea, 6-3. The tandem of Caputo and Goetz fell to Berger/ Herrington, 6-3, on court No. 2, while Courteau and White fell, 6-4, at the No. 3 slot.
In the afternoon session, the Mountaineers faced host Louisville in singles matches. WVU earned wins in two matches as Choo bested Ariana Rodriguez, 6-3 and 6-4, at No. 5 and Goetz defeated Mia Schmidt-Jorgensen, 6-3 and 6-3, at No. 6.
At No. 1, Jordan fell to Mariana Humberg, 6-1 and 6-1, to begin singles play. Louisville's Abbie Pahz defeated Duran at No. 2, Caputo fell to Tiffany Huber at No. 3, and Courteau dropped a 6-3 decision in two straight sets to Raven Neely at No. 4.
Additionally,
Kirsten White competed against Michigan State's Baylis, falling, 6-1 and 6-0.
"Lyn Yuen and Paula had a good start to the tournament in singles play today," coach
Miha Lisac said. "We also had Lyn Yuen and Anne-Sophie as well as Sofía and Christina with a good start to the doubles competition. We will look to learn from today's matches and progress tomorrow."
The Louisville Tennis Classic resumes for the Mountaineers on Saturday, Nov. 8, as they take on Michigan State in a doubles match at 10 a.m. ET at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center. WVU then faces Louisville in a doubles match at 11 a.m., before facing Ball State in No. 7 and No. 8 singles matches at noon. WVU wraps up the second day of competition against BSU with a singles tilt at 3:30 p.m.
