
No. 1 WVU Trumps No. 10 Memphis

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The top-ranked West Virginia University rifle team opened its weekend road swing victoriously, defeating No. 10 Memphis, 4730-4634, this afternoon inside the Memphis Rifle Facility in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Mountaineers (7-0, 5-0 GARC) tallied their fifth Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) win of the season with a sweep of the discipline titles. WVU outshot Memphis 2349-2293 in smallbore and 2381-2341 air rifle. The Mountaineers' smallbore total was their second season-high mark in as many matches.
"I think today was a good match for the team," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "They were very consistent throughout the day and performed at a high level in both events. I do think everyone left today thinking we could improve in a few areas, but they all worked hard in a new range after a long trip. They stay focused and worked hard on the mental side."
A pair of Mountaineers earned the individual victories. Junior Ginny Thrasher matched her season-high smallbore total with a 593 mark (199 kneeling, 200 prone, 194 standing). Included in the Springfield, Virginia, native's day was a program-record matching 199 kneeling and 200 prone.
Redshirt-freshman David Koenders tallied a career-best 598 (99-100-100-99-100-100) for the air rifle win.
"Ginny had a fantastic start in smallbore today," Hammond said. "She has been working really hard and was a bit under the weather, but she stuck with the match and put in a strong effort.
"David had his challenges today, but he's learned a lot and was able to come away with a strong performance."
The Mountaineers claimed the top seven spots in smallbore. Sophomore Morgan Phillips finished behind Thrasher with a career-best matching 590 mark, including a 200 prone score. Phillips first shot 590 smallbore against Army West Point on Nov. 5.
Sophomore Milica Babic shot 584 and finished third in smallbore, while Koenders tied senior Elizabeth Gratz for fourth place, as each shot 582. Freshman Sarah Osborn shot 579 and finished in sixth place, and junior Will Anti matched his season-high mark of 578 and placed seventh.
Redshirt-freshman Noah Barker shot 570, and sophomore Jack Anderson tallied 557.
Levi Clack paced the Tigers with a 578 mark.
Babic finished behind Koenders in air rifle with a 597. Osborn shot a career-best 595 and finished in third place, while Thrasher placed fourth with a 594 total.
Anti shot 593 and finished in fifth place, while Gratz added a 592 score and placed sixth. Phillips finished in eighth place with a 590 mark.
Anderson and Barker shot 580 and 571, respectively.
Leighton Dempster finished seventh overall and paced Memphis with a 591.
Five Mountaineers counted toward the team's scores: Babic, Gratz, Koenders, Phillips and Thrasher.
With the win, WVU improves to 12-2 all-time against the Tigers.
