The Mountaineers enter the 2017-18 campaign as the defending Big 12 Tournament Champions after upsetting No. 2 Baylor, the top seed in the tournament, in the championship game in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, last season. WVU became just the second No. 6 seed to win the Big 12 Tournament and is one of six programs to claim a share of a regular season title and a tournament championship. They made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing at 24-11 overall and 8-10 in Big 12 play.
Tynice Martin scored 82 points in three games, including a championship-game record 32 against Baylor, to earn the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player award. She will make a late return in her junior season after suffering an injury this summer but was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team earlier this month. In addition, Martin was named a Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Second Team honoree as well as a College Sports Madness Fourth Team All-American.
Forward
Teana Muldrow joined Martin on the all-tournament team last season and returns for her senior campaign in 2017-18. Muldrow was a Big 12 Honorable Mention last season after averaging 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Guards
Chania Ray and
Katrina Pardee join Martin and Muldrow as captains for the season. Ray returns for her final season at WVU after leading the Big 12 with 5.9 assists per game. She ranked inside the top 30 of the NCAA in assists, assists per game and minutes played in 2016-17. Pardee ranked sixth in the league with a 39.4 three-point field goal percentage and totaled 261 points as a sophomore.
"Katrina's going to have a good year this year," Coach
Mike Carey said. "She's stronger this year. She worked hard all summer. I expect her to have a big year."
Martin is one of several players in flux for the Mountaineers, who will dress eight or nine players for Sunday's exhibition. True freshmen
Ashley Jones,
Destiny Harden and
Makayla Stanley, as well as junior college transfer
Naomi Davenport, are expected to join the returners on the court, creating a new look for WVU this season. Senior forward
Kristina King is expected to see playing time, while redshirt junior center
Theresa Ekhelar will be eligible second semester. Redshirt freshmen
Krystaline McCune and
Nia Staples continue to work their way back from injuries. Junior
Anja Martin (injury) and sophomore
Kysre Gondrezick (transfer) will miss the season.
"You don't want to change your whole system," Carey said. "Nothing is more boring than watching a women's team walk up and down the floor. As a coach, we all understand that, but as a fan, we don't want to see that. Chania doesn't want to walk it up. Katrina doesn't want to walk it up, but there are going to be times when I've got to slow them down and we're going to have to execute and there are going to be times when we have to go 2-3 zone because Teana is going to get into foul trouble. She has done it for three years and this year is probably not going to be any different. We don't have anybody to put in to replace her so we've got to protect them a little bit more than what we have until we get players back."
The Mountaineers came in at No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 Coaches Preseason Poll, released on Thursday. Big 12 foes Baylor (No. 3), Texas (No. 6) and Oklahoma (No. 21) also appeared in the poll while K-State received votes.
West Virginia Wesleyan is led by second-year head coach Vicky Bullett, who went 6-20 in her first season at the helm. Bullett is a former WNBA player and Olympian who boasts nine newcomers on her roster. Mari Stewart (13.1 ppg), Tara Goldman (11.6 ppg) and Lana Long (10.8 ppg) led the way for the Bobcats last season and are back for 2017-18, and will be joined by a pair of freshmen in the starting lineup.
WVU will open the 2017-18 season on Friday, Nov. 10, when the team hosts Central Connecticut State in a 7 p.m. tip at the WVU Coliseum. It will be Military and First Responder Appreciation Night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and all active, retired and veteran military and first responders will receive free admission with ID.
