Mountaineers Defeat Albany in Charity Exhibition Game

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Lamont West's 26 points led West Virginia to a 98-67 victory over Albany in tonight's charity exhibition game played at the WVU Coliseum to benefit the American Red Cross' hurricane relief fund.

A total of $27,139.56 was raised by American Red Cross volunteers accepting donations inside the Coliseum concourse tonight. The two teams received a waiver from the NCAA to play the game; an estimated crowd of 5,100 was in attendance.

West's 26 points came on eight-of-14 shooting, including five-of-nine from 3-point distance.

More than half of West Virginia's first-half field goal attempts came from beyond the 3-point arc (17 of 32) and the Mountaineers continued to hoist up 3s in the second half as their lead swelled to more than 30 points.

"I thought we shot way too many 3s, more than half of our shot attempts in the first half were 3s and that's way too many," said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins.

The game stretched well past two hours with both teams committing a combined 56 fouls that resulted in 73 total free throw attempts.

"I want to go back and look at the film because I think I saw things (the referees) didn't seen and they probably saw some things I didn't see, that I need to see so I can get better," Huggins said.

Sophomore guard James Bolden contributed 16 while Jevon Carter and freshman forward Teddy Allen added 15 points each for the Mountaineers.

Albany, members of the American East Conference, was led by forward Travis Charles' 15 points.

The Great Danes won 21 games last season and are predicted to finish second in their conference behind Vermont this year.

Tonight, Huggins used a starting lineup consisting of Carter and Daxter Miles Jr. in the backcourt, sophomore Sagaba Konate at center, and junior college transfer Wesley Harris and West at the forward positions.

Ten different players got into the game. Suspended forward Esa Ahmad didn't dress and sophomore forward Maciej Bender was unavailable because of back spasms.

Tonight's game replaced the Gold-Blue Debut and will be the only public exhibition before the Mountaineers open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, at Ramstein-Meisenbach Air Force Base in Germany against Texas A&M.

That game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
