Mountaineers Race for Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team races for a conference title at the 2017 Big 12 Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28, in Round Rock, Texas.

The women's 6k championship race is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET, at Old Settlers Park, featuring the top runners from all 10 Big 12 institutions. The top-15 finishers from the race will be named to the All-Big 12 team.
"The team appears to be quite healthy and focused for this weekend's Big 12 Championship," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Training has progressed well since our last race and we expect the results to reflect the importance of this race."

Saturday marks the first time the Big 12 Championship will be run at Old Settlers Park. The Mountaineers have never competed at the course.
The race features three teams represented in the most recent United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll, which was released on Oct. 17. Iowa State is ranked No. 23, while Oklahoma State and Baylor are receiving votes.
Last year, WVU placed third at the Big 12 Championship in Lubbock, Texas, the best finish for the program since finishing second in 2013 and 2014. The Mountaineers earned 111 team points, behind Iowa State (56) and Oklahoma State (82). Oklahoma (124) and Baylor (126) rounded out the top five.
Redshirt senior Jillian Forsey earned a spot on the all-conference team following a second-place individual finish at the 2016 Big 12 Championship. In all, the Mountaineers have placed six runners on the All-Big 12 team in the past five seasons.
WVU is seeking its third conference championship in program history. The Mountaineers earned a Big East championship in 2007 and won the Atlantic 10 title in 1994.
West Virginia last competed at the Penn State National Open in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 13. The Mountaineers earned an eighth-place team finish and were led by redshirt senior Amy Cashin, who crossed the finish line in 11th place in a time of 20:43. Redshirt senior Maggie Drazba was next for West Virginia, finishing 20th in a time of 20:57.
