WVU at No. 15 in Coaches Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team was ranked No. 15 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll released on Thursday.
West Virginia made a magical run through the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament, knocking off No. 19 Oklahoma and No. 12/14 Texas to make it to the championship game, where the Mountaineers upset No. 2 Baylor, 77-66, to win the program's first-ever Big 12 Tournament title. Guard Tynice Martin was named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player after setting a new championship game record with 32 points against the Lady Bears, totaling 82 points in the tournament. She was joined on the all-tournament team by forward Teana Muldrow.
The Mountaineers finished the season at 24-11, going 8-10 in Big 12 play. They made their 12th NCAA Championship appearance, marking a school-record 11 straight years in the postseason. A No. 6 seed, WVU advanced to the NCAA Championship Second Round, concluding the season with an 83-56 loss at No. 3-seed Maryland.
WVU earned 272 points for the No. 15 ranking. Other Big 12 teams in the Top 25 poll are No. 3 Baylor (687), No.6 Texas (608) and No. 21 Oklahoma (151).
Previously, the Mountaineers appeared at No. 9 in Street & Smith's, No. 11 in Athlon Sports and No. 14 in Lindy's Sports. Martin was named a Preseason All-Big 12 Team selection, as well as a College Sports Madness Preseason All-America Fourth Team honoree. In addition, she was named to Street & Smith's Preseason All-America Second Team.
The Associated Press Top 25 Poll will be announced Nov. 2.
West Virginia will host West Virginia Wesleyan in a Haunted Hoops exhibition game at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday. Presented by Coca-Cola, tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. Fans can Trunk-or-Treat in the RV lot of the Coliseum starting at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. and the event is free of charge to all fans. Prior to tipoff, WVU will unveil its 2017 Big 12 Tournament Championship banner.
The Mountaineers open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 10, when they host Central Connecticut State in a 7 p.m. tip at the WVU Coliseum.
