Redshirt senior Nate Carr was named the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Morgan Bullock earned the Big 12 Women's Swimmer of the Week. In diving, senior Logan McHenry was named the Big 12 Men's Diver of the Week, while junior Julia Calcut was selected as the Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week.
The Mountaineers earned all four bi-weekly awards for the second time in program history. WVU also accomplished the feat last season.
"It's great seeing our athletes recognized by the conference," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "They all had very strong first meets and starts to their seasons."
Carr, who was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 9, won eight events at the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 6-7 and tallied two WVU Natatorium records in the process. His victory in the 200 individual medley broke his own pool record in the event, as the Charleston, West Virginia, native touched the wall in 1:48.97. He was also a part of the 800 freestyle relay team's record-breaking performance at the meet. The group comprised of Carr, junior Drew Damich and sophomores Ryan Kelly and Trayton Saladin earned a first-place time of 6:44.75, good for a new pool record.
Carr also earned individual victories in the 100 breaststroke (56.85), 200 breaststroke (2:04.76) and 400 individual medley (3:57.56) during the season-opening weekend. Additionally, Carr helped the 200 medley relay (1:32.82), 200 free relay (1:22.34) and 400 medley relay (3:22.06) to wins.
Bullock also tallied one of WVU's three pool records at the West Virginia State Games. Her performance in the 200 individual medley broke the previous WVU Natatorium record in the event, which was set in 2015. The Zeeland, Michigan, native earned a first-place time of 2:04.46.
Bullock went on to win six other events during the two-day meet, including individual wins in the 100 butterfly (55.75) and 200 butterfly (2:04.07). She helped four relay teams to victories in the 200 free relay (1:35.05), 200 medley relay (1:46.79), 400 medley relay (3:51.56) and 800 free relay (7:37.61). Bullock added a second-place finish in the 50 free (24.24) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 free (53.11).
On springboard, McHenry won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at the West Virginia State Games. The Ventnor City, New Jersey, native earned an NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 314.40 on 1-meter before adding to his win total by posting a first-place score of 310.20 on 3-meter.
Calcut also earned an NCAA Zone-qualifying score at the West Virginia State Games, as her 267.80 on 1-meter gave her the win in the event. The Zeeland, Michigan, native also grabbed a second-place finish on 3-meter, earning a score of 252.00.
"Both Logan and Julia have been working really hard through preseason and have made some positives strides toward achieving their goals," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "They both wanted to get their Zone-qualifying scores out of the way early and each did so. I'm proud of their hard work and look forward to a successful season."
In all, WVU won 35 of 40 events at the West Virginia State Games, as both the men's and women's teams claimed first-place finishes.
Additionally, Saladin was named the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week by CollegeSwimming last week. Along with helping the 800 free relay team to its pool record at the West Virginia State Games, Saladin also won the 100 butterfly (49.47), 200 backstroke (1:52.13), 500 free (4:32.62), 1,650 free (16:16.11) and was a part of a first-place 400 free relay team (3:06.62).
