MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore Danique Bryan opened up competition for the West Virginia University track and field team, setting a career-best indoor mark on the first day at the PSU National Open in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Friday.
West Virginia started Friday’s competition in field events, and will continue with track events on Saturday.
“Danique (Bryan) started things off very well for the weekend,” said coach Sean Cleary. “This is a personal indoor best for Danique, being her first meet of the year and we are very pleased with her night. It's clear that she can go further- a few more meets and she will be in a very good place. The pole vaulters saw some progress. As a group, it was a solid night. Being introduced to this level of competition will pay dividends later in the season. We had four freshmen out there. We feel they handled things well.”
Bryan got things started for the Mountaineers as she posted a runner-up finish in the women’s long jump with a career-best indoor mark of 5.91 meters. She improved .31 meters from last year’s best at the Big 12 Championship.
In the women’s pole vault, freshman Alexis Baublitz placed eighth with a mark of 3.50. Teammate freshman Greer Gumbrecht followed in ninth place with a mark of 3.50 meters.

Penn States hosts 27 teams at the PSU National Open at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Two women’s teams competing at the event are nationally ranked in the most recent USTFCCCA rankings – No. 20 Georgetown and No. 23 Stanford.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will travel to Akron, Ohio, to compete at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 3-4. Competition each day will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET.
