MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team begins competition on the road as the team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete at the PSU National Open on Jan. 27-28.
Penn States hosts 27 teams at the two-day event at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Friday’s events are set to begin at 5:00 p.m. ET, and Saturday’s events begin at 9:00 a.m. ET. Fans can follow the meet live at Gopsusports.com/livestats.
“This is the longest that our program has ever waited before hitting the road,” said coach Sean Cleary. “After two home events, we will have the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the East Coast's very best. We are opening up most of our team this weekend, so we should be able to assess where we are and the areas that need work.”
Two women’s teams competing at the event are nationally ranked in the most recent USTFCCCA rankings – No. 20 Georgetown and No. 23 Stanford.
The Mountaineers hosted their final home meet, the WVU Open, on Jan. 14. WVU claimed three victories, two in individual events and one in relay competition. West Virginia also added five second-place finishes.
West Virginia posted its first win in the women’s high jump thanks to sophomore Faith Penny who took the victory with a mark of 1.71 meters. Freshman Candace Jones finished first in the women’s 500-meter run with a time of 1:18.46. In relay competition, the West Virginia team of Jones, Welker, McNeil and Robinson finished first in the women’s 4x400-meters with a time of 4:11.00.
West Virginia will have a quick turnaround as the team travels to Akron, Ohio, to compete at the Akron Invitational on Feb. 3-4. Competition each day will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET.
