MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Highlighted by six competitions over five weekends, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has unveiled the rowing schedule for the 2017 season.
The Mountaineers are slated to compete against five teams that were ranked in the final 2016 CRCA/ US Rowing Coaches Poll and four teams that competed at the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championships.
West Virginia will open the spring season in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, at the Cardinal Invitational from March 11-12. Twelve teams will be competing in the three-round invitational: Clemson, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Tulsa, Virginia and West Virginia.
“We’ll open at the always challenging Cardinal Invite where three, perhaps four schools, will appear in the national pre-season rankings,” coach Jimmy King said, “The opportunity to compete against some of the country’s best on the course where the Big 12 Championship will be contested at season’s end is very worthwhile to us.”
Virginia and Michigan finished third and 10th, respectively, at the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championships, while Notre Dame finished the season ranked No. 18 in the final coaches poll of 2016.
The first round of the Cardinal Invitational will be held on the morning of Saturday, March 11, while the second round will be held on Saturday afternoon. The final round will take place on the morning of Sunday, March 12.
Following a week hiatus, the Mountaineers will travel to the nation’s capital to take on Georgetown in a dual race on March 25.
On April 8, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, will play host to the Big 12 duals. The Mountaineers will face off with Big 12 adversaries Alabama and Tennessee.
“The newly instituted Big 12 Duals are a good thing for our conference ensuring there is sufficient cross-racing to assist in seeding for the Big 12 Championship four weeks later. Intra-conference racing has varied significantly in years past, so this is a positive action for the regular season as well as the postseason.
West Virginia will take on Alabama in a dual race before competing against Tennessee in the final race of the day.
WVU will travel to Pittsburgh to take on familiar foe Duquesne and Dayton on April 22.
The following day, the Mountaineers will travel to the George Mason Invitational, held in Fairfax Station, Virginia. The first round of the invitational will pit WVU against Big 12 foes Kansas and Old Dominion. The second round will be based upon the results of the first round of competition, the Mountaineers could face Dayton, George Mason, George Washington, Buffalo, Delaware or Eastern Michigan.
In the final regular season race of 2017, the Mountaineers will travel to Philadelphia to take on host Temple, Delaware and 2016 NCAA Championship participant Navy, on April 29.
“Our regular season will conclude in Philadelphia on the historic Schuylkill River where we have not competed in many years,” King said. “Although none of our team members have competed there as Mountaineers, for some it will be a return to familiar waters where they competed as juniors prior to attending WVU. We typically enjoy a great turnout of supporters when competing in the mid-atlantic area and expect the same this season.”
West Virginia will begin postseason competition at the Big 12 Championship held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, on May 13 and 14. The winner will claim the league’s automatic big to the 2017 NCAA Rowing Championship. Texas has won the conference championship in six of the last eight years.
