Caffrey Tabbed Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball freshman Payton Caffrey has been tabbed the Big 12 Co-Rookie of the Week for the week of Sept. 26, as announced by the league on Monday. She shares the award with Micaya White of Texas.
This week marks the second consecutive week and third time overall Caffrey has earned the award.
“Payton’s preparation and work ethic has led to her consistent performance,” said coach Reed Sunahara, who picked up his first Big 12 win this weekend. “She continues to work on all aspects of her game to help her team.”
Caffrey ended the week leading the Big 12 in both points per set (6.50) and aces per set (0.50) while ranking second in kills per set with 5.71. Overall, she ranks second in the league with 4.95 kills per set, 0.40 aces per set and 5.57 points per set.
The outside hitter from Chuluota, Florida, led WVU with 26 kills in a 3-1 loss to No. 5 Texas on Tuesday in Morgantown. She hit .259 in the match and just missed her eighth double-double of the season with nine kills in addition to a pair of aces.
On Saturday, Caffrey led WVU to its first Big 12 win since 2014 with a 3-0 sweep of Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. She netted a team-best 14 kills eight digs, three blocks and a pair of aces, hitting .323 in the match.
The Mountaineers (9-6, 1-1) host a pair of matches in the WVU Coliseum this week, welcoming TCU to Morgantown on Wednesday before prepping for a Friday tilt with Iowa State. First serve for both is set for 6 p.m.
