“Our week starts with one of the top teams in the country, UMBC was a Final Four team just two years ago,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “Then we’re looking forward to George Mason on Saturday. It’ll be a tough week for us, but we’re looking forward to it.”
The Mountaineers (3-1) have won their last three matches, including its first two at home as part of a five-game homestand. WVU is coming off a 1-0, overtime victory over ETSU on Friday, September 9. Freshman Logan Lucas scored the game-winner for West Virginia, his first collegiate goal, while junior goalkeeper Jose Santos had a career-best four saves to record his third consecutive shutout.

Sophomore midfielder Tucker Stephenson has scored two of WVU’s three goals this season and has a team-best four points, 11 shots and five shots on goal. Junior Joey Piatczyc leads the team with two assists and is tied with Lucas for second on the team with two points. In goal, Santos owns a 3-1 record and has made five saves.
SCOUTING UMBC
Playing its first road match of the season, UMBC owns a 1-1-2 record. The Retrievers opened the year with a 1-1 draw to Fordham before a 3-1 loss to UNC Wilmington and a 1-1 draw to Northern Illinois. UMBC concluded its season-opening homestand with a 3-2 win over Monmouth.
The Retrievers are coached by Pete Caringi Jr., in his 26th season. With a 273-158-66 record, he has guided UMBC to the NCAA Tournament five times. The Retrievers reached the College Cup in 2014, capping three consecutive NCAA berths.

West Virginia is 0-3 all-time against UMBC, with the last meeting occurring in 1996. The series began with a 4-1 loss in 1978 in Baltimore. After a hiatus of nearly 20 years, the squads met in back-to-back seasons, first in 1995 with a 5-0 victory for UMBC on its home turf, followed by a contest in Morgantown in 1996, a 2-1 UMBC win.
LAST TIME OUT: OT WINNER
WVU won its third consecutive match on Sept. 9, as freshman defender Logan Lucas scored the overtime winner in the 100th minute in a 1-0 victory over ETSU. Lucas’ golden goal was his first goal of his collegiate career, and he was assisted by junior Joey Piatczyc off a free kick and junior Steven James.
In goal for West Virginia, junior Jose Santos notched his third consecutive shutout and made a career-best four saves. WVU held an 18-12 edge in shots, and an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.

LEBLANC HITS THE CENTURY MARK
