WVU Moves Up to No. 6 in Regional Ranking

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team moves up to No. 6 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Regional ranking, announced on Monday.
West Virginia opened the 2016 season with a team and individual win at the Texas Tech Open in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept 8, and a fifth place finish at the Harry Grove Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 10.
At the Texas Tech Open, West Virginia earned victories as a team and individually, thanks to redshirt junior Jillian Forsey who won the event. The Mountaineers posted four top-six finishes. Out of 12 teams, WVU won with a score of 20 points, besting Big 12 foe Texas Tech by 15 points.
In a field of 70 runners, Forsey crossed the finish line in 21:05.50. Behind Forsey was redshirt junior Maggie Drazba who placed second overall with a time of 21:27.80. Redshirt junior Brynn Harshbarger finished in fourth place with a time of 22:38.80 and senior Brianna Kerekes placed sixth with a time of 22:46.00. Redshirt senior Megan Yuan placed ninth overall in 23:01.10.
At the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Penn State’s Blue/White Golf Course, junior Amy Cashin crossed the finish line first for WVU, placing 14th overall with a time of 21:45. Redshirt freshman Olivia Hill came in second for the Mountaineers, finishing 28th with a time of 22:40, followed by redshirt freshman Candace Jones in 32nd (23:04) and redshirt juniors Allie Diehl in 36th (23:17), and Rebecca Wendt in 37th (23:21).
The Mountaineers were ranked No. 7 in the USTFCCCA preseason regional ranking.
The Mountaineers have three weeks off before competing at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 1.
