Mountaineers Open 2016 Season with Alumni Race
August 31, 2016 12:29 PM | Cross Country
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University cross country team will open the 2016 season with the WVU Alumni Open on Thursday, September 1, at 7 p.m., at the Mon River Rail Trail in Morgantown.
“This will be a relaxed opener for the season,” coach Sean Cleary said. “Bringing together past Mountaineers with the current team is very laid back introduction.”
To kickstart the 2016 season, current and former Mountaineer runners will participate in the 4k alumni race located behind Terra Café, on Industrial Ave.
Several WVU alumni, including NCAA All-American Sarah Martinelli, last year’s NCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Regional runner Savanna Plombon and NCAA All-American and Pittsburgh marathon winner in 2013 and 2014 Clara Santucci will run in the event.
Last year, seven alumni participated in the Alumni Open.
WVU ranks No. 7 in the 2016 USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region preseason ranking. The Mountaineers are also receiving nine votes in the preseason national rankings.
West Virginia will open regular-season competition at the Texas Tech Invitational on Sept. 8, in Lubbock, Texas.
