2016 Cross Country Schedule Unveiled

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has revealed the WVU 2016 cross country schedule.
“We’re excited about the schedule,” said coach Sean Cleary. “Early on, we’ll see the courses that we’ll run the championship portion of our season on. Each meet winds up in terms of importance to the girls and that’s how we try to set up our schedule. Each one gets a little bit more pressure-filled and a little bit more important. We like to start slow and easy and work our way into it.”
The Mountaineers open the season at home with the WVU Alumni Open on Thursday, September 1.
“We’ll have a fun opener with the alumni meet,” said Cleary. “It will bring together some of the past runners in the program and give us a very light introduction into the season. We did it last year, and I thought it went well.”
This season, WVU will have the chance to preview both the Big 12 Championship course and the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional course in the regular season.
Regular-season competition starts off as the team competes at the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, on September 8. This is the first time the Mountaineers will compete on Texas Tech’s course. The Red Raiders also will host the 2016 Big 12 Championship.
For the fifth consecutive season, the Mountaineers will compete at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational, held on September 10, in State College, Pennsylvania. PSU also will serve host to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on November 11.
West Virginia will compete at the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on October 1. Two weeks later on October 14, the team returns to PSU for the second time this season to compete at the National Invitational.
WVU will compete for a Big 12 title at the Big 12 Championship on October 29, in Lubbock, Texas. Last season the squad finished third overall.
The Mid-Atlantic Regional is set for November 11 in State College, Pennsylvania, and the NCAA Championships is on November 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
