MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University golfer Jon Ransone will compete in the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio, on Monday, June 6, as he looks to qualify for the 2016 U.S. Open.
Ransone finished second at the local qualifier at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, on May 16 to advance to the sectional qualifier. The USGA announced last week that he was selected for the Springfield location, located roughly 60 miles from his hometown of New Albany, Ohio. He will be paired with professionals Brian Stuard and Gordon Vietmeier.
“”I’m really excited about getting this experience,” said Ransone. “Getting to play with the pros is a great learning opportunity.”
Held at the 6,684-yard, par-72 Springfield Country Club, the Springfield sectional will start with fixed tee times at 7 a.m. on Monday. Ransone, Vietmeier and Stuard will tee off of hole No. 1 at 8 a.m. The top four finishers of the 59-player field will advance to the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pennsylvania, June 16-19.
Currently on the PGA TOUR, Stuard is coming off his first-ever TOUR win after claiming the Zurich Classic of New Orleans on May 2 with a score of 15 under, winning a playoff over An Byeong-hun and Jamie Lovemark. Vietmeier is a Pittsburgh-area teaching professional and the owner of the Gordon Vietmeier Indoor Golf School.
In addition to Stuard, PGA TOUR players Tony Finau, Troy Merritt, Matt Jones, Zac Blair and Graham Dalaet will compete at the Springfield sectional. Nathan Holman of the PGA Tour of Australasia will also participate. All are currently competing in the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide (May 30-June 5) at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.
Ransone played 10 rounds in four events for the Mountaineers in WVU’s first varsity season in more than three decades. He posted a season low round of 71 and shot 71-74-73=218 to finish five over par at the Joe Feaganes Invitational in October. Ransone finished even par with a score of 72 at the local qualifier in May.
