MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Rising senior Nate Carr represented the West Virginia University swimming team in the 400 individual medley on the first day of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, on Sunday. Carr placed 78th.
In Sunday’s first day of competition, Carr placed 78th overall in the men’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:32.62. He competed in the sixth of 10 heats.
“Nate has done a good job making a change in his racing of the 400 individual medley this summer, but today he was out a bit too fast on the butterfly and it caught up to him on the second 200 meters,” WVU coach Vic Riggs said. “It’s right around his best morning swim, but just like at NCAAs, you need to swim like it’s the finals in prelims at this level. This wasn’t the best start to our week.”
Carr is one of four Mountaineers competing at the eight-day trials at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center. He is joined by WVU graduates Bryce Bohman, Andrew Marsh and Max Spencer and they will compete in a total of nine events for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
Competition continues tomorrow for West Virginia when Bohman and Marsh race in the 100 backstroke. On Wednesday, Marsh competes in the 100 freestyle and Spencer swims in the 200 breaststroke. The following day, Carr races in his second event, the 200 individual medley. The prelims conclude for WVU on July 1, with Bohman in the 100 butterfly and Marsh racing in two events, the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle.
Heats will begin at 11 a.m. ET each day, while the finals will start at 7:45 p.m. ET.

Swimmers with the top 16 times in the morning heats will advance to the semifinals. The top eight times in the semifinals will move on to the finals with the first- and second-place finishers in the finals qualifying for the 2016 Olympics.
