WVU Completes Day Two of NCAA East Prelims
May 27, 2016 10:40 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the second day of the 2016 NCAA East Prelims on Friday at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
"It was a bitter sweet day," said coach Sean Cleary. "Hannah, Amy and Megan all qualified for this meet with their lifetime-best marks of the season. Today all three exceed their rankings in the most prestigious meet of the year. While we always want a little more out of our athletes at this level, to exceed ones expectations is satisfying. Hannah has had a wonderful career at West Virginia. Many times an All-Big 12 performer and even more impressive, an incredible leader. Hannah and Savanna in their final meets as Mountaineers will be missed."
Juniors Amy Cashin and Megan Yuan represented West Virginia in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Cashin took a top-15 finish, placing 15th with a new personal-best time of 10:11.08. She improved 10.28 seconds from her previous best time. Yuan placed 37th with a time of 10:38.27.
Senior Hannah Stone competed in the field events for the Mountaineers. She tied for 27th high jump with a mark of 1.71 meters.
Sophomores Jillian Forsey will compete in the 5,000-meter run and Shamoya McNeil will represent the Mountaineers in the triple jump on Saturday.
The first round of the triple jump begins on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET. McNeil qualified in the triple jump with an outdoor career-best mark of 12.76 meters set at the Texas Relays. The top-12 best marks will advance to the finals of the National Championships.
Forsey will compete in the semifinal of the 5,000-meter run for WVU at 8:05 p.m. ET, as she qualified for the event with a time of 16:05.89 set at the Stanford Invitational. The top-five finishers in each heat, as well as the next two fastest times, will advance to the finals of the National Championships.
Live results and additional championship information can be found at NCAA.com.
The qualifiers from the East and West regions will advance to compete at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships set for June 8-11 in Eugene, Oregon.
