West Virginia Caps Season at Big 12 Championship

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed the 2015-16 season on Sunday afternoon at the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The Mountaineers collected 12 team points to finish eighth overall. Among Big 12 foes, WVU was fifth with 57 team points.
No. 8 Texas was crowed the Big 12 champion for the second consecutive year, winning all five events. The Longhorns earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championship. Oklahoma took second place with 41 team points, while Tennessee rounded out the top three with 34 points.
“The racing effort put forth by our crews today was very good,” said WVU coach Jimmy King. “Our second varsity eight and second varsity four finished one spot higher than their seeds. Overall, our team raced more competitively than in years past.”
WVU’s second varsity eight boat finished in fifth overall with a Grand Final time of 7:13.679. The Mountaineers placed fifth out of eight crews to place one spot higher than its original seed.
West Virginia’s second varsity four crew captured a first-place finish in the Petite Final with a time of 8:09.853. WVU placed seventh overall in the second varsity four event to also place one spot higher than its original seed.
Additionally, the first varsity eight boat placed second with a Petite Final time of 7:03.769, just two seconds shy of Alabama’s crew (7:01.659). The third varsity eight boat crossed the finish line with a Petite Final time of 7:29.100 to place second behind Old Dominion (7:27.592). The first varsity four crew completed the 2,000-meter course with a Petite Final time of 8:13.037 to place second behind Big 12 foe Kansas State (7:51.015).
This weekend’s championship marked the final race for four Mountaineer seniors: Sadie Kalathunkal, Susannah Hartlove, Elizabeth Kantak and Brittany James. Kantak capped her career by being named to the All-Big 12 Rowing Team.
“I’m very thankful for the contributions that our seniors have made to our program: Sadie, Liz, Sue and Britt,” King stated. “They will be missed.”
