MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opened competition at the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.
On the first day of the eight-team, two day event on Melton Hill Lake, the Mountaineers’ second varsity eight advanced to tomorrow’s Grand Final. The crew earned a third-place finish in the second of two heats to earn the Grand Final appearance.
“While our second varsity eight advanced as expected to tomorrow’s Grand Final, we had hoped to see a couple more of our crews race their way in regardless of their seeds,” said WVU coach Jimmy King. “Despite today’s results, most of our crews raced well this afternoon. We’re looking forward to ending the season well in tomorrow’s finals.”
The championship concludes with the finals in five events on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET. Live results, a video stream and more championship information can be found on Big12Sports.com. Along with WVU, the championship field features Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, No. 8 Texas and affiliate members Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee. Sunday’s finals will determine the conference’s automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Rowing Championship.
In the second varsity eight, WVU finished thirds to earn a spot in the Grand Final. West Virginia completed the 2,000-meter in 6:48.900 to earn the top-three finish by over 10 seconds ahead of Alabama.
The Mountaineers will race in lane one in tomorrow’s Grand Final, alongside Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Old Dominion.
