Eleven Mountaineers Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eleven West Virginia University track and field student-athletes were named to the 2016 Academic All-Big 12 Team, announced today.
“Academic excellence has always been the cornerstone of this program,” said coach Sean Cleary. “I am incredibly proud of West Virginia University, our academic support staff and each and every young lady in our program with their commitment to achieving the highest level of academic success. The term student-athlete is exactly that. Student first, athlete second. We will always do whatever we can to ensure that our student-athletes have every opportunity to take the highest level of education with them as they embark on life after college.”
A total of 11 Mountaineers were honored for their commitment in the classroom, while nine earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team and two were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
Seniors Kelly Williams and Sydney Scott and junior Amy Cashin were highlighted for their perfect 4.0 GPA’s.
West Virginia and Oklahoma State have the most student-athletes who were honored with 4.0 GPA’s among all Big 12 women’s track and field.
The Mountaineers’ first team honorees include seniors Savanna Plombon, Scott, Hannah Stone and Williams, juniors Cashin, Brianna Kerekes, Bria Welker and Rebecca Wendt and sophomore Shamoya McNeil.
Second team accolades includes sophomores Sara Finfrock and Madelin Gardner.
First team honorees are student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team members hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
