MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Competing for the fourth straight day, the West Virginia University golf team took 14th at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, on Tuesday.
WVU shot a team score of 295-303-314=912 to finish 48 over par. McNeese State finished two over par to win the team title with a score of 866, while Ole Miss was second at eight over par with an 872. Host Mississippi State finished seventh with an 891 for 27 over.
“After 126 holes of golf in just five days, our guys are worn out,” coach Sean Covich said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have much time to rest as we leave for Ohio State on Thursday.”
Chris Williams finished nine over par in the tournament, shooting a 71-76-78=225. He registered a pair of birdies on the front nine, but struggled in finishing the final round and finished 37th overall.
Competing as an individual, Tristan Nicholls recorded his lowest round of the tournament, finishing two over on Tuesday to tie for 41st place. He shot 77-75-74=226 for 10 over par.
Alan Cooke rebounded from a rocky second round to shoot a 74 and finish two over on the final 18 holes. His scorecard read 73-82-74=229 for 13 over as he finished tied for 55th place.
Easton Renwick and Avery Schneider tied for 63rd and 65th, respectively. Renwick shot 16 over with a score of 74-77-81=232, while Schneider was a stroke behind at 17 over. He shot 77-75-81=232.
Freshman Max Sear ended the tournament 19 over par with a score of 235. He registered a score of 77-75 on the first day, but struggled in the final round and shot and 83.
West Virginia will compete again at the end of the week as the Mountaineers travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the Robert Kepler Invitational. The event will be hosted by Ohio State at the Scarlet Course Saturday and Sunday.
