MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a two week hiatus, the West Virginia University rowing team returns to the water this week to race against Duquesne and Mercyhurst College on Saturday, April 23, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Competition from the Allegheny River is set to begin at 8 a.m. The three teams will compete in first varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight races as well as a first varsity four and a second varsity four race.
“Each time we line up, we are looking for all of our crews to have more complete races than the last time out,” said coach Jimmy King. “Whether by improving a technical element, racing focus or simply putting one’s self out there a bit more, we’re looking for more speed."
This weekend’s competition will be the fourth event of the spring for West Virginia.
Most recently, West Virginia competed at the prestigious Knecht Cup Regatta from April 9-10, in West Windsor Township, New Jersey. The two-day event featured crews from 70 schools across the country, including more than a dozen Division I women’s programs. Big 12 foes Alabama, Kansas and Old Dominion also competed on Mercer Lake.
At the event, the novice four crew placed sixth out of 30 entries with a Grand Final time of 8:11.70. The second varsity eight boat finished in fourth place in the Petite Final with a time of 7:01.00. Overall, WVU placed 10th out of 27 entries in the second varsity eight event.
RACE SCHEDULE:
First varsity eight: 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.
Second varsity eight: 8:10 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.
