MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s soccer team closes its road spring slate with a pair of matches at the George Mason Soccer Jamboree on Saturday, April 16, at the GMU Practice Fields, in Fairfax, Virginia.
The Mountaineers open the day at 1 p.m. against the Washington Spirit, members of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). WVU previously was scheduled to meet Maryland in the Jamboree opener. The squad will close the afternoon against American at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played at the facility’s Field 2.
“This is an exciting weekend for us with two opportunities to get better,” Mountaineer assistant coach Marisa Kanela said. “By playing back-to-back matches, we’ll be able to see where the level of fitness is for our girls and to witness the results of their hard work in the weight room, on the track and on the field.”
Saturday is the Mountaineers’ second match of the spring against a NWSL squad. WVU fell, 3-0, to the Western New York Flash, on March 19.
“We’re lucky to have a second competition against pro-level players, as this match will help make us better and push us toward achieving our goals for this spring season,” Kanela added.
In their last outing, the Mountaineers earned their first victory of the spring with a 2-0 win over Georgetown at Dreamswork Field on April 10. Sophomore forward Heather Kaleiohi tallied both goals, the team’s first of the season, while classmate Michelle Newhouse made four saves for the shutout.
“We’re definitely looking to build off last weekend’s win and to continue to execute our offense and defense collectively as a unit,” Kanela concluded.
A complete recap of both matches will be available Saturday evening
