MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team completed a series of races against North Carolina and Old Dominion at the North Carolina Duals today in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Lake Wheeler.
The Mountaineers won three races and tallied five runner-up finishes against the Monarchs and Tar Heels on the 2,000 meter course.
“The Novice 4+ was our top performing crew of the day,” said coach Jimmy King. “They successfully applied the gains made during this week’s spring training camp into today’s competition, earning open water wins in two races.”
The morning races were highlighted by a first-place finish in the first novice four race. The novice four crew featured coxswain Kaitlin Sullivan, Amanda Garn, Kara Ehrenberger, Nicole Bender and Sarah Williams and crossed the line in 8:12.0 to cap off the morning series. UNC finished in second with a time of 8:36.7, followed by ODU with a time of 8:40.9 for third place.
In the afternoon session, the second varsity eight boat came out on top over two of North Carolina’s crews. The boat of coxswain Brittany James, Alisha Brownfield, Lillian Westerman, Janae Hurst, Carly Ledbetter, Grace Dever, Elizabeth Hooper, Jacqueline Spiropoulos and Abbigail Rees finished in first place with a time of 6:58.1, five seconds ahead of UNC.
“After a disappointing morning against ODU, both our varsity eights responded with much stronger performances in the afternoon against UNC,” King explained. “Now, we need to take that effort home to the Mon River and continue working on our speed.”
The novice four finished the day just how it began, with another first-place finish over Old Dominion and North Carolina. The crew of Sullivan, Garn, Ehrenberger, Bender and Williams crossed the line in 8:08.6, shedding four seconds off its morning race time.
“Thank you to the many family and friends who cheered us on for today’s racing,” King noted. “We had supporters from Washington, Florida, Michigan and many places in between. In addition, I want to give a special thanks to WVU professor Emeritus Willem “Vim” Van Eck who was on hand to speak to our team and cheer us on.”
The Mountaineers return to the water in two weeks for the Knecht Cup Regatta, held on April 9-10, in West Windsor Township, New Jersey.
