West Virginia Competes at North Carolina Duals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a two week hiatus, the West Virginia University rowing team returns to the water to compete at the North Carolina Duals on Friday, March 25, in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Competition is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Lake Wheeler. West Virginia will race Old Dominion in the morning, followed by North Carolina in the afternoon. The three teams will compete in first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and first novice four races.
“Old Dominion and North Carolina are still relative unknowns at this point in the season, so we don’t really know how well we matchup,” said coach Jimmy King. “All of the schools have had some prior competition, in races and/or scrimmages this season, so we’ll all be more prepared to race this weekend.”
The Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational opened the 2016 campaign for the Mountaineers, from March 12-13, at the Melton Hill Lake Rowing Venue, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Melton Hill Lake is the same site as the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship, set for May 14-15. Over the course of two days, West Virginia raced a trio of first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four crews on the 2,000-meter course.
“Following the Cardinal Invite, we went back to work on the ergs,” King stated. “We also had the benefit of being at spring break camp this whole week. With ample time to work on technical elements as well as accomplishing our daily work, we’ve been able to take a couple of steps forward. The coaches will look for the gains made this week and put it into action in Friday’s race.”
The Mountaineers traveled south for spring training from March 19-24, in Lake Lure, North Carolina.
