MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by five regattas and a dual race in Pittsburgh, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons revealed the 2016 rowing schedule on Wednesday.
The 2016 schedule includes a dual race against Duquesne on the Allegheny River, the Knecht Cup and the EAWRC Sprints. The Mountaineers will travel to North Carolina and Pennsylvania and will compete in New Jersey and Tennessee twice throughout the 2016 season.
“This spring’s schedule is a good mix of larger regattas and smaller dual races, both of which are valuable in our preparation throughout the season for the Big 12 Championship in May,” said coach Jimmy King. “Our season starts at the Cardinal Invite where we’ll see three Big 12 foes along with a highly competitive group of teams from the ACC and Big Ten. With our first race less than a month away, we’re very eager to get off the ergs and back onto the water for those first strokes of the spring."
West Virginia opens the season at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, from March 12-13, hosted by the University of Louisville. Approximately a dozen schools are scheduled to compete in the two-day event, including three Big 12 members – Alabama, Kansas and Oklahoma – and four opponents ranked in the final Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll last season – No. 5 Virginia, No. 10 Michigan, No. 16 Notre Dame and No. 20 Louisville.
WVU returns to the water on Friday, March 25, as it travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a pair of duals against North Carolina and Big 12 affiliate Old Dominion, on Lake Wheeler. In the morning, West Virginia will compete against Old Dominion, followed by a head-to-head race against North Carolina in the afternoon.
The Mountaineers then travel to Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey, for the Knecht Cup Regatta on April 9-10. The competition includes nearly 70 schools from across the country each year. Big 12 foes Alabama, Kansas and Old Dominion are scheduled to compete at the two-day event as well.
Following the Knecht Cup, West Virginia takes the short trip up I-79 for a dual race with Duquesne, on Saturday, April 23, on the Allegheny River.
WVU wraps up its regular-season on Saturday, May 1, when the squad travels to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, to compete in the EAWRC Sprints for the second consecutive year. More than a dozen schools are scheduled to compete at the one-day regatta on the Cooper River, including two opponents ranked in the final CRCA Poll last season – No. 14 Harvard and No. 19 Northeastern.
Two weeks later, West Virginia will compete at the 2016 Big 12 Rowing Championship. The 2016 season marks the fifth time the event has been recognized as a fully-supported conference championship. It will be hosted by the University of Tennessee at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, for the second consecutive year on May 14-15.
Affiliate members Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee will join Big 12 opponents Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia in the 2016 championship, with the winner claiming the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Rowing Championship. The Longhorns are coming off five conference championships in the last seven years.
