MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field ended its regular season, today, at the Penn State Tune-Up in State College, Pennsylvania.
WVU notched a victory in the 3,000-meter run and posted four top-two finishes: the 60 meter hurdles, the 600-meter run and the one mile.
“This meet served us well,” coach Sean Cleary said. “Each event group had some very positive moments. Amy (Cashin) joined a very exclusive club, running under 4:40 today. I was especially pleased with her race after being slightly off the last few weeks. Our vaulters were clearing bars, and they look good for conference.”
Sophomore Maggie Drazba won the 3,000 meters, finishing in a career-best time of 9:38.41. Drazba improved her time by .18 seconds. Senior Kelly Williams also competed in the event and placed third with a time of 10:14.28.
Junior Amy Cashin posted a second-place finish in the one mile, crossing the line in a career-best time of 4:39.85. Cashin improved from her previous mile time by 7.51 seconds.
The Mountaineers took four top-five finishes in the pole vault. Sophomore Madelin Gardner placed second with a vault of 3.90 meters. Senior Tori Bertrand came in third, marking 3.75 meters, followed by sophomore Sara Finfrock in fourth (3.60 meters) and sophomore Rebekah Lafata in fifth (3.45 meters). Finfrock and Lafata posted career-best marks on the day.
West Virginia notched a top-two finish in the 60-meter hurdles, thanks to sophomore Meghan Jean-Baptiste. Baptiste finished second in 8.88, matching her season-best time at the Akron meet on Feb. 6.
In the women’s 600-meter run, junior Brianna Kerekes led the way for the Mountaineers, finishing in second place with a time of 1:33.69. Crossing the finish line in fourth place was sophomore Rebecca Wendt in 1:35.53. Wendt recorded a career-best time in the race, improving by 3.5 seconds.
The Penn State Tune-Up concluded the regular season for the Mountaineers.
Next up, the Mountaineers travel to Ames, Iowa, to compete for a Big 12 title at the 2016 Big 12 Indoor Championship on Feb. 26-27. Iowa State will host the championship inside the Lied Recreation Center.
Last year, West Virginia finished ninth in the conference, while 10 Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors.
