WVU Takes Third at President’s Day Challenge

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team opened its spring portion of the season with a third-place finish at the President’s Day Challenge at the Shadow Hawk Golf Club in Richmond, Texas, on Monday.
Along with West Virginia, Rice hosted Houston on the par-72 7,207-yard long course, in the one day 36-hole tournament.
Houston took the team title after scoring 298-289=587 for 11 over par. Rice led the team scores in the first round, carding 297, while scoring 291 in the second round to total 588 for 12 over par. The Mountaineers rounded out in third place with a team score of 312-314=626 for 50 over par.
"I was proud of the effort Tristan (Nicholls) gave us today,” said coach Sean Covich. “He's been battling some illness this trip, and I was proud to see him compete like that. Overall, we didn't do as well as we would have liked, but considering this trip was all about getting some practice time for everyone and sorting out the lineup for our first full-field event at Florida State, I think we accomplished a lot."
For West Virginia, Alan Cooke tied for 13th place after scoring 77-77=154 for 10 over. Easton Renwick tied for 16th with teammate Chris Williams as they both finished with a score of 79-76=155, 11 over par. Williams finished with four birdies, while Renwick had two.
Mason Short tied for 17th in the first round but fell to 23rd place after shooting 79-85=164 (+20).
Playing as individuals, Tristan Nicholls tied for second in the first round, scoring one over par with a 73. Nicholls ended the two rounds, tying for ninth place with a score of 73-75=148 for four over par and tallied four birdies.
Avery Schneider played individually for the Mountaineers, carding 78-80=158 (+14) to place 19th overall. Schneider finished the day with four birdies. Cole Hand tied for 24th, ending with a score of 79-89=168 (+24) and three birdies.
Other Mountaineer individuals was Jon Ransone tying for 20th place, and Tae Wan Lee who finished in 26th. Ransone scored 81-78=159 for 15 over par, while hitting five birdies. Lee finished the two rounds with a score of 86-85=171 and hit three birdies.
The Mountaineers will have a month off the course before they compete at the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Country Club in Tallahassee, Florida, March 11-13.
