MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Student-athletes and coaches from the West Virginia University baseball, volleyball and women’s basketball team participated in the annual Holiday Angel Shopper Buddy program on Wednesday evening at Walmart off Hornbeck Road in Morgantown.
The student-athletes and other individuals in the community assisted 63 children with various winter accessory items such as gloves, socks and jackets. Additionally, the children were allowed to pick a toy of their choice.
“It’s always great to help out other people, especially children in our community,” stated women’s basketball senior center Lanay Montgomery. “I felt like I was taking my niece shopping. All the children were very happy and thankful. The holiday season is about giving back and putting smiles and other people’s faces.”
“It was really an eye-opening experience to see how some families live in Morgantown,” said Erin Slinde, a freshman setter from the WVU volleyball team. “It made me appreciate everything that WVU gives me as a student-athlete, and I’m glad that I was able to give back to the community that I know will support me throughout my career here.”
This year was the 25th year of the Holiday Angel program and marked the sixth year that the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics participated.
