MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University novice rowing team will travel to Fairfax Station, Virginia, to compete at the 32nd annual Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, November 5.
The Head of the Occoquan is hosted by the Occoquan Boat Club, and will be held at Sandy Run Regional Park. The event, which will kick off the fall season for the novice squad, is one of the largest rowing regattas in the United States.
“We are looking forward to our first novice race of the season,” assistant coach Tina Griffith said. “We have been working to prepare ourselves and are excited to get the opportunity to test ourselves against a large and solid field.”
WVU will begin the regatta with two boats competing in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ event. The boats are slated to launch at 11:50 a.m. ET. Following the 4+ event, two WVU boats will compete in the women’s 8+, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
Last season, The Mountaineers posted four top-five finishes, winning four medals, including a gold at the Head of the Occoquan. Additionally, eight of the 10 WVU boats finished in the top 10.
The varsity and novice teams will be back in action on November 11, as they host Duquesne in Morgantown to close out the fall season. The varsity team has been off since they took on Bucknell on October 8 and 9.
