WVU Hosts Morehead State on Wednesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 16/17-ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team resumes action on Wednesday, Nov. 30, against Morehead State. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
All youth in eighth grade or lower, who wear a youth team jersey, will receive free admission. Tickets are priced at just $5 and can be purchased at WVUGAME.com or by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU GAME. Will Call and all game day ticket sales will take place at the Gold Gate ticket windows only. Fans who have already purchased tickets can have their ticket scanned and enter the Blue, Gold or Country Roads gates.

West Virginia (7-0) cruised to an 82-59 win over High Point on Sunday. Tynice Martin led the way with 21 points, while collecting four assist and four steals. Lanay Montgomery (15 points/14 rebounds) and Teana Muldrow (12 points/10 rebounds) each had a double-double in the victory.
The Mountaineers have held their last eight opponents to less than 40 percent shooting and limited High Point to 35.6 percent from the field (21-of-59) on Sunday. WVU ranks No. 3 nationally in field goal percentage defense (28.8%), No. 7 in scoring defense (49.7 ppg) and No. 8 in scoring margin (+28.7). West Virginia has won 28 consecutive games against nonconference opponents at the WVU Coliseum dating back to the 2013-14 season.
Martin leads the Big 12 and ranks 31st in the NCAA with 20.6 points per game. Other Big 12 leads include Chania Ray’s 6.6 assists per contest and Montgomery’s 3.0 blocks per game.
WVU and Morehead State meet for the second time on Wednesday, the first coming last season. MSU led by eight points at the end of the first quarter. However, WVU stormed back with a 76-30 run the final three quarters to win the contest. Bria Holmes led the way with 29 points, while Montgomery had a double-double with 12 points and 18 rebounds.
Morehead State (5-2) has won its last two games including a 100-52 win over Kentucky Christian on Monday. MSU fell to Georgia State, 68-50, and at No. 20 Kentucky, 74-47.
The Eagles are averaging 72.4 points and shooting 40.7 percent (200-of-492) from the field. Opponents are scoring just 58.1 points per game and are shooting at a 31.3 percent (139-of-444) clip. MSU’s field goal percentage defense is seventh in the NCAA. Morehead State ranks fourth nationally with 7.6 blocked shots per game and is fifth in the NCAA with a three-point field goal percentage defense of 19.2 percent.
Eriel McKee paces MSU with 11.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Preseason All-OVC selection Brianna McQueen follows with 11.3 points per game. Aaliyah Wells rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.0 points per contest. Brooke Todd is fifth nationally with 3.9 blocks per game.
No. 16/17 West Virginia participates in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge for the first time on Sunday, Dec. 4, in a 4 p.m. tip against Ole Miss. All fans who donate a toy for the WVU Toy Mountain drive will receive free admission for the game or a future women’s basketball game. The first 500 fans will receive a free ugly holiday sweater T-shirt. Additionally, members of the Mountaineer Kids Club will have the opportunity to shoot around on the court following the game.
WVU Climbs to No. 17 in Coaches Poll
The West Virginia University women’s basketball team moved up six spots to No. 17 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Other Big 12 teams in the poll include: No. 4 Baylor, No. 12 Oklahoma and No. 15 Texas.
