MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University golf coach Sean Covich announced Monday that Mark Goetz (Greensburg, Pennsylvania/The Kiski School) signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to join the Mountaineers for the 2017-18 season.
“Western Pennsylvania golf has a long, proud tradition of producing some of the best golfers in the nation,” said Covich. “Mark has continued to get better over the last two seasons and he really developed his game playing against some of the best juniors from the region and around the nation. I look forward to him being a Mountaineer next season.”
Playing for The Kiski School, Goetz won four medalist titles in 2016, including the 2016 Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PISAA) State Championship. He was the runner-up at both the 2016 Independent Preparatory School Championship (IPSL) and the 2016 Keystone Cup Championship. Goetz, who hails from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, won a trio of medalist honors in 2015 as well, also winning the IPSL Championship.
Goetz was the runner-up at the 2016 Tri-State PGA Junior Championship with rounds of 69-70, and placed third at the 15th Northern Junior Championship with rounds of 73-68. He finished in the top five at both the West Penn Junior Amateur Championship and the PGA Junior Series. In addition, Goetz qualified for the 2015 PGA Junior Championship after claiming the PGA Junior Series Championship at Westbrook Country Club, shooting 70-70-73 in the process. He was selected to play in the C.R. Miller Match Play Invitational and represented the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association (WPGA) in the Williamson Cup in 2015.
The son of Brian and Carla, Goetz intends to major in business. He joins Matthew Sharpstene in the 2016 signing class.
