Nine Mountaineers Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine West Virginia University cross country student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, announced by the league on Thursday.
“This result is a testament to incredible discipline and tenacity of our group,” said coach Sean Cleary. “We raced 10 women this fall and have been rewarded with nine of those 10 garnering Academic All-Big 12 accolades. Our 10th runner was so very close to joining her teammates, making certain that she will join this elite group by next fall. So many are to thank for providing our student-athletes with each and every resource that is required to maintain this level of academic success. To be running at the level that this team competes at all the while, maintaining grade point averages as a team above 3.6 displays how very special they are.”
The nine Mountaineers were recognized for their dedication in the classroom, while redshirt junior Amy Cashin was highlighted for her 4.0 grade point average.
Senior Brianna Kerekes, redshirt senior Megan Yuan, redshirt juniors Cashin, Allie Diehl, Maggie Drazba, Jillian Forsey, Brynn Harshbarger and Rebecca Wendt and redshirt freshman Olivia Hill were all named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
First team honorees are student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team members hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Mountaineers are on their way to State College, Pennsylvania, to compete at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. ET.
