Mountaineers Close Fall Season In Morgantown
November 10, 2016 11:06 AM | Rowing
MORGANTOWN, W.Va –The West Virginia University rowing team hosts Duquesne on the Monongahela River in Morgantown on Friday, November 11, at noon ET. The exhibition will be the second and final race of the fall season for the varsity and novice squads.
The teams will compete in four 1000-meter pieces that will alternately start and finish by the Star City bridge. Live updates of the race will be available on Twitter and Facebook at @WVUrowing.
Fans are encouraged to watch the race from the Star City Marina and the Edith B. Barill Riverfront Park, located in Morgantown. Pets are welcome in the park and there is a play area for small children. Parking will be provided free of charge at the marina. Members of the WVU rowing team will be at the park to explain aspects of rowing and racing.
This is the third year in a row that the Mountaineers and the Dukes have squared off in a fall scrimmage. In 2014, the novice squads competed in Morgantown, and in 2015 the novice squads competed in Pittsburgh.
"This is the second and final competition of the fall for both the varsity and novice squads,” coach Jimmy King said. “The novice squad is only one week removed from its first competition, but unlike last weekend's distance racing, this scrimmage will give the novices a taste of the kind of sprint racing we do in the spring. For the varsity squad, the scrimmage is an opportunity to test our speed against a familiar foe."
Last weekend, the novice team travelled to Fairfax Station, Virginia to compete in the 32 annual Head of the Occoquan where three of the four Mountaineer boats finished in the top five of their races, and all four finished in the top 10. In the novice women’s four race, WVU’s ‘A’ boat rowed their way to a first-place finish, while the ‘B’ boat finished three spots behind their teammates in fourth place. In the novice women’s eight event, West Virginia’s ‘A’ boat took third place and the ‘B’ boat finished in tenth. The varsity team has been off since they took on Bucknell on October 8 and 9.
