WVU Opens Fall Season at Bucknell
October 09, 2016 03:04 PM | Rowing
MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University rowing team opened the fall season this weekend at Bucknell with a head race on Saturday morning and three sprint races on Sunday.
The teams were competing for the Skotedis Cup, named after the former Bucknell rowing coach, John Skotedis. A first and second varsity eight competed for both teams in each event, with the winner of each race earning a point towards the Skotedis Cup. Bucknell won the Skotedis Cup by a final score of 6-2.
“This weekend’s combined head and sprint racing was quite fun and provided a more in-depth assessment of where we’re starting this year,” coach Jimmy King said. “I am very happy to see how our crews attacked their racing and I’m particularly pleased with the change and improvements made from race to race by both crews.”
On Saturday, the Mountaineers’ and the Bisons’ second varsity eights lined up with each other, while the first varsity eights started further up the river. Bucknell claimed the first varsity eight race, while West Virginia prevailed in the second varsity eight.
The two teams competed in three one-kilometers races on Sunday, where the first varsity eights competed against each other and the second varsity eights raced against each another for a total of six races.
WVU’s second varsity eight won one race, while the first eight was defeated in all three races.
The Mountaineers’ novice squad opens their fall season when they travel to Fairfax Station, Virginia, to compete in the Head of Occoquan on November 5.
