MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 22 West Virginia University men’s soccer team hosts No. 1 Maryland on Monday, October 10, at 7 p.m. ET for a top-25 matchup at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Mountaineers (6-3-1) are coming off a 1-0 loss to Bowling Green and were shut out for just the second time this season. The undefeated Terrapins (9-0-2) have won six in a row and are 2-0-2 on the road.
Against No. 1 teams at home, West Virginia is 2-0 in the Marlon LeBlanc era, with victories over top-ranked UConn in 2007 and 2011. WVU is 3-0 against top-five teams at home since 2006.
WVU senior forward Felix Angerer, junior midfielder Jad Arslan and sophomore midfielder Tucker Stephenson lead the team with two goals each, while Angerer, Arslan and junior midfielder Joey Piatczyc have notched a team-high-tying five points. Piatczyc and freshman defender Sebastian Garcia-Herreros have a team-high three assists, and Stephenson’s 19 shots leads the Mountaineers.
Junior goalkeeper Jose Santos, who has made 28 saves and recorded seven shutouts, leads the Mid-American Conference and is No. 2 nationally in goals-against average (0.48) and is No. 2 in the MAC and 13th nationally in save percentage (.848).
SCOUTING NO. 1 MARYLAND
Undefeated and top-ranked Maryland comes to Morgantown with a 9-0-2 record and a 2-0-2 mark away from home. The Terrapins have won six in a row, capped by a 2-0 win against Ohio State on Friday. UM has shut out its opponents in four straight matches. Against top-25 competition, Maryland is 2-0-2, with a pair of home wins and draws at No. 16 UCLA and No. 4 Indiana.
The Terrapins are led by Sasho Cirovski, in his 24th season. He owns a 355-131-45 record with two NCAA titles, in 2005 and 08, and 21 NCAA appearances. His teams have made eight NCAA College Cups and won 14 conference titles.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE TERRAPINS
West Virginia is 2-3 all-time against Maryland, with just one meeting coming at home. The Mountaineers claimed the first two matches, 2-1 in 1971 and 1-0 in overtime in 2007. In 2008, WVU suffered a 1-0 home loss. The last match between WVU and UM came in 2011, when the two teams met in August, a 3-1 Maryland win, and again in the NCAA Tournament, a 4-0 West Virginia loss.

WVU’s home season concludes on Saturday, October 15, at 7 p.m. ET, for a Senior Night matchup against Mid-American Conference foe Buffalo. Before the match, WVU will honor its senior class of Felix Angerer, Mike Desiderio, Christian Diaz, Jack Elliott, Griffin Libhart and Trevor Moon. On a rainy night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, West Virginia suffered a 1-0 loss to Bowling Green in both teams’ Mid-American Conference opener.
The Mountaineers had 12 shots, three on goal, but were shut out for just the second time this season. The Falcons had eight shots, six on goal, and Pat Flynn scored in the 53rd minute.
Eight of WVU’s 12 shots, and all three shots on goal, came in the second half. Similarly, BGSU recorded six second-half shots, with four of its five shots on goal coming in the final 45 minutes. Junior goalkeeper Jose Santos made five saves, while Bowling Green’s Anthony Mwembia stopped all three shots he faced.
Offensively for the Mountaineers, senior forward Felix Angerer and sophomore midfielder Tucker Stephenson led the team with three shots. Stephenson had two shots on goal, with Angerer accounting for WVU’s third shot on goal.
