MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team won five of six matches in doubles and posted four wins in singles play on the second day of the Viking Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio.
“We had an opportunity to play a lot of matches today in singles and doubles,” said coach Miha Lisac. “It is good for us to be in competitive situations and give the team a chance to learn from competitive situations. We saw some solid competing in doubles from our teams. We handled singles’ situations better than yesterday.”
WVU opened the day with a doubles match against Duquesne, where the Mountaineers found themselves the victors in two of the three matches. Habiba Shaker and Makenzie Stolar fell to Duquesne’s Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman, 6-4, to begin the day. Senior Kaja Mrgole and Abigail Rosiello bested Megan Wasson and Zuzanna Stelmaszak, 6-2. In the final match against Duquesne, Carolina Lewis and Yvon Martinez defeated Ally Miller and Laurel Shymansky 6-2.
The Mountaineers then faced Akron in a doubles match, where they swept the Zips. Shaker and Christina Jordan defeated Karalina Maksimava and Carli Knezevich in a close match, 7-6 (5). Mrgole and Lyn Yuen Choo then defeated the Zips Ariadna Blinova and Sophia Geier, 7-5. In the final doubles match of the day, Paula Goetz and Lewis dropped Rita Pedroso and Luisa Echeverry, 6-3.
WVU closed out the second day of the Viking Invitational with a singles match against host Cleveland State.
Lewis defeated Joanna Schober, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 2 singles spot while Goetz earned a win over Aleksandra Golawska at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Jordan downed Victoria Bensimon, 6-4, 6-2, while Rosiello defeated Princess Gbadamosi in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6).
Choo fell to Isabella Spindler at No. 1 singles, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 1-0 (4). Martinez suffered a setback to Blanche Lenoan in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (7). In an exhibition set, Stolar fell to CSU’s Zuzanna Stelmaszak by a score of 6-2, 6-1.
The Mountaineers will close out the Viking Invitational on Sunday, October 9, as they take on Duquesne in a singles match at 9 a.m. at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. WVU then faces Cleveland State in a doubles match at noon to wrap up the action.
