LAWRENCE, KANSAS – The No. 2-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team looked absolutely dominant in a low-scoring outing at Kansas tonight, controlling possession for the majority of the match and earning a 1-0 victory at Rock Chalk Park.
The victory pushes the Mountaineers' win streak to four and halts the Jayhawks' unbeaten streak at the same mark. WVU (11-1-1, 3-0) improves to 6-0 all-time against KU (8-4-2, 3-1).
With the win, WVU is now the lone unbeaten team remaining in the Big 12 Conference. The victory was the Mountaineers' 30th in Big 12 play; the squad shows a 30-1-3 all-time record.
"I thought the effort, intensity and mentality was great tonight," Mountaineer coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "I was proud of the way we came in on Kansas' field and set the tone early."
The WVU defense smothered KU tonight, allowing just five shots, with only one each half landing on-frame. In their six meetings, the Jayhawks have failed to score a goal against the Mountaineers.
Freshman
Rylee Foster made two saves for her fifth career shutout. WVU has now posted a shutout in six of its last eight Big 12 road matches, dating back to the 2014 season.
The Mountaineers finished with a season-high 14 corner kicks tonight, but it was the eighth chance that proved to be the difference, as junior midfielder
Alli Magaletta headed in a perfectly placed ball from senior midfielder
Ashley Lawrence for her second game-winner of the season.
"Alli was relentless tonight and found a way to break through. It was great for her to get one in the net," added Izzo-Brown.
The assist was the fourth of the season for the Toronto native, and she now shows 23 career helpers, moving her into a tie with Laura Kane (2001-04) and Rachel Kruze (1999-2002) for fifth place on the program's all-time career assist list.
The Mountaineers finished with 18 shots and forced KU's Maddie Dobyns into three saves.
"We did a good job of keeping the pressure on Kansas tonight," Izzo-Brown said. "We had some really good looks and some nice ball movement. Now, we need to put names on our passes in the final-third."
WVU wasted little time earning its first shot on-goal, as sophomore defender Bianca St. George followed through on a clean look just 81 seconds into the match, but her long shot was stopped by Dobyns.
A trio of Mountaineer forwards created a great chance in the 18th minute. Junior
Michaela Abam sent a long through ball that was chased down to the end line by sophomore
Sh'Nia Gordon. The Ocklawaha, Florida, native earned position on the KU defender and placed the ball perfectly in front of the net, where junior
Heather Kaleiohi took a close-range shot, but she was stuffed by Dobyns at the line.
KU's lone quality threat in the first half came in the 24th minute. The series opened with a distance shot from forward Grace Hagan that was blocked away by defender
Amandine Pierre-Louis. Off the ensuing throw-in, KU worked the ball behind the WVU backline and it trickled toward the goal line, where forward Katie McClure got her foot on it right in front Foster. The rookie goalkeeper sprawled out on the line for her lone save of the half.
Abam nearly made it a two-goal game in the 55th minute, as she received the ball at the top of the box from senior defender
Kadeisha Buchanan, but her shot from distance was stopped by Dobyns.
The Jayhawks earned their best look of the game in the 74th minute. McClure took an on-mark shot from just outside the box that sailed around the Mountaineer defensive line and toward the net. Foster made the right first move and batted the ball out of the air before falling on it to halt any more chances.
Abam finished with a game-high four shots. Four different Mountaineers finished with one shot on-goal. McClure paced KU with two shots, both on-goal.
The win moves WVU's all-time program record to 297-102-45, three short of program victory No. 300.
The Mountaineers next play at Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m. ET.
