MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Oct. 12, 2016) – In its final nonconference match of the season, the West Virginia University volleyball team ended a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Robert Morris on Wednesday evening at the Charles L. Sewall Center in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. The Mountaineers rolled to the victory in set scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-15.
West Virginia moves to 11-9 on the season (2-4 Big 12), finishing with a 9-5 mark in non-league matches. Robert Morris drops to 9-13 overall.
“It was good to be on the road again and get a win,” said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. “Robert Morris played well. I'm glad we got the win, especially persevering with two close sets.”
Payton Caffrey notched a team-high 17 kills, adding a trio of digs and a block assist. Mia Swanegan had seven kills with a pair of blocks, while Natania Levak and Hannah Shreve each had six kills. Shreve hit a team-best .556 and led the blocking effort with four blocks assists, while Levak added in a pair of block assists as well.
Morgan Montgomery had four kills as WVU finished the night hitting .159 with 41 kills and 6.0 team blocks.
Gianna Gotterba led the floor defense with 11 digs as MaTia Hughes added seven. Haley Roe assisted on 18 kills and had the team's lone ace of the night, while Erin Slinde had 12 assists and a pair of blocks.
A trio of early errors put WVU in a 4-2 hole before Levak teamed with Shreve for a block, then put down a kill to tie the set, 10-10. The Colonials scored four in a row for a 14-10 advantage, before three straight RMU errors tied the score once again at 16-16. A kill from Levak and back-to-back Robert Morris errors put West Virginia at set point before Swanegan found the court to put the set away, 25-22, and give the Mountaineers the 1-0 lead.
Behind nine kills from Caffrey, the Mountaineers took the second set, 26-24, for a 2-0 lead. She found the court twice for an early 4-1 lead, but the Colonials rattled off five straight in taking a 9-6 lead. Caffrey added two more kills as West Virginia took seven consecutive points for a 14-10 advantage. The teams played to three more times as Shreve found the court to knot the score at 23-23 before a ball handling error on RMU and consecutive Caffrey kills gave the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineer offense fared much better in the third set, hitting .414 with 17 kills. A kill from Swanegan put WVU up 7-5 before Shreve stretched it to 9-6. WVU used a kill from Caffrey and a block from Slinde and Shreve to take four straight for an18-10 advantage. Shreve then teamed with Caffrey for a stop to put the score at 22-13 before Caffrey and Swanegan each found the court to give the Mountaineers the 25-15 win.
Arden Fisher and Taylor Lord led the Colonials with six kills each. Robert Morris hit .011 with 23 kills and 8.0 team blocks.
West Virginia returns to Big 12 play this weekend. The Mountaineers host Baylor on Saturday in a 3:30 p.m. match at the WVU Coliseum.
