MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s basketball team was predicted to finish fourth in the Big 12 Conference preseason poll, as voted by the league’s head coaches.
Baylor (81) received nine of 10 first-place votes, as coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams. Second-place Texas (73) received the other first-place vote, while Oklahoma (61) was chosen third. West Virginia (57) and Kansas State (50) round out the top five. TCU (34) was picked sixth, while Iowa State (28) and Texas Tech (28) tied for seventh. Oklahoma State (23) was chosen ninth, followed by Kansas (15).
The Mountaineers finished the 2015-16 campaign with a 25-10 overall record and a 12-6 mark for a third-place finish in the Big 12. West Virginia made its 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and a school-record 10th consecutive postseason appearance. The Mountaineers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after picking up a 74-65 win over Princeton.
Junior Teana Muldrow is the Mountaineers’ leading returning scorer, averaging 10.6 points per game. Senior Lanay Montgomery, an All-Big 12 Second Team and Big 12 All-Defensive Team performer last season, returns after boasting 8.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. Reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year Tynice Martin also returns after averaging 10.3 points and 3.2 rebounds during her rookie season. Both Martin and Montgomery garnered Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention.
Kristina King, the 2016 National Junior College Player of the Year, highlights the Mountaineers newcomers. King averaged 19.1 points and 8.8 rebounds en route to Gulf Coast State’s national title run last season. Last week, King was named the Big 12 Preseason Newcomer of the Year as voted by the league’s coaches.
