Kansas State got a first-quarter touchdown run by quarterback Jesse Ertz and two field goals from Matthew McCrane to take a 13-0 lead over West Virginia at halftime of today’s Big 12 opener being played at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Ertz completed only 6 of his 18 first-half pass attempts for 118 yards, and the Wildcat rushing attack managed to average just 2.7 yards per attempt, but the Kansas State defense was as good as advertised.
Just twice West Virginia managed to drive the ball beyond the 50, and both times the Mountaineers failed to come up with points. The came on West Virginia’s opening possession of the game when it got to the K-State 8, but Josh Lambert’s 30-yard field goal attempt hooked wide left.
Two possessions later, WVU moved the ball to the 31 where this drive ended on downs.
Statistically, the two teams were pretty close in total yardage, K-State holding a slight 178-174 edge, but the Wildcats were far better with what they were able to do at the end of drives.
McCrane’s two field goals came from distances of 37 and 31 yards in the second quarter.
West Virginia will get the football to begin the second half.
