September 25, 2015 03:17 PM | Cross Country
This weekend, Megan Metcalfe will be inducted into the West Virginia University Sports Hall of Fame. For Mountaineer cross country and track & field coach Sean Cleary, this is one of his proudest moments, and he couldn’t be happier for Metcalfe.
“I’m so proud of her,” said Cleary. “It’s just amazing. It’s a wonderful accomplishment for the program, for her and for all the women that have ever ran here.”
Metcalfe marks the first women’s cross country runner, and the third women’s track and field athlete, to be inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame. She portrayed athleticism throughout her career as a cross country runner, as well as a track and field distance runner. Competing at WVU from 2000-05, she graduated with nine All-America titles, and she became the first Mountaineer to achieve two All-America honors in cross country.
The Edmonton, Alberta, native capped her remarkable career with a national championship in the 5,000-meter event at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, earning her ninth career All-America honor.
During her tenure at WVU, she competed twice at the World Cross Country Championships and competed at the World University Games in Turkey. Throughout 2005-08 and 2010, Metcalfe earned first-place finishes in the Canadian Senior Championship, the Pacific World Cup in Burnaby, British Columbia, and the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She competed in the final at the World Indoor Championship in the 3,000-meter event in Valencia, Spain. Metcalfe competed for Canada in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where she ran a personal best of 15:11.23 in the 5,000 meters.
To this day, Metcalfe holds WVU records in the 3,000 meters indoor (8:58.17), the 1,500 meters outdoor (4:12.00), the 3,000 meters outdoor (9:04.02) and the 5,000 meters outdoor (15:47.64). She earned numerous honors at WVU – NCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region (2000, 2002-04), All-Big East (2000, 2002-04), Most Outstanding Female Track performer 2003 and countless others.
Metcalfe and the class of 2015 officially will be inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame prior to the WVU vs. Maryland football game on Saturday, Sept. 26 at noon, in the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.
