MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team is ranked No. 11 in the first United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Poll, released today.
WVU was ranked No. 10 in the 2015 preseason national ranking poll.
The Mountaineers competed for the first time against opponents last weekend, placing third at the PSU Spiked Shoe Invitational in University Park, Pennsylvania.
“We have a very unique sport,” said coach Sean Cleary. “We lose to two teams in our last meet, yet still remain near the top 10 in the country.”
For the first time in its program history, New Mexico ranks at No.1. Other teams ranked inside the top 10 are Iowa State (No. 2), Colorado (No. 3), Michigan State (No. 4), Georgetown (No. 5), Stanford (No. 6), Oregon (No. 7), Providence (No. 8), Arkansas (No. 9) and Wisconsin (No. 10).
Senior Savanna Plombon competed at the PSU Invite for the first time since 2013. Plombon was the first Mountaineer to finish the 6k event, placing 12th overall (22:18).
Sophomore Rachel Faulds placed 17th with a time of 22:41, followed by classmates Corinne Kule in 19th (23:21), Renee Maisonneuve in 20th (23:22) and Allie Diehl in 21st (23:24).
“Results will start taking on a greater meaning, in terms of national qualifying and rankings, as we move into the countable part of our season,” said Cleary. “We have a few weeks to train and prepare for the biggest challenges of our schedule.”
WVU has two weeks off before traveling to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete at the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 3. The course will serve as a preview for the NCAA Cross Country Championship set for Nov. 21.
