MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – After shooting one under par as a team in the first round, the West Virginia University golf team stumbled in the second and finished the day in 12th place overall at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington on Monday.
The Mountaineers shot a 283 (-1) through the first 18 holes, putting them in the top five for team scoring but posted a 293 (+9) in the second to end the day eight over par with a two-round total of 576. Belmont sits the team leaderboard at 13 under par with a score of 55, while Ohio is in second with a score of 560 (-8). Host Marshall is one spot behind the Mountaineers in 13th at 577 (+9).
“Shooting under par as a team in the opening round of the tournament was encouraging,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “Alan (Cooke) had an outstanding first round, shooting a 67. In the second round, we struggled and failed to post a good number. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes and can come out tomorrow with a better performance.”
Making his WVU debut, Easton Renwick is T-17th with a score of 71-70=141 and one under par. Starting on the fifth hole, Renwick birdied the sixth before recording a pair of bogeys to move to plus one. After bogeying Hole 10, he added a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish the first round even par. He birdied 10 again in the second round, bogeying 14 before finishing with a birdie on the first hole to finish the second round one under.
Alan Cooke put six birdies on the scorecard in the first round, shooting a 67 (-4) to hold a spot in the top-five. He faltered in the second round, recording six bogeys and a birdie on his way to a score of 76 (+5). He sits T-28th place with an overall score of 143 for one over par.
Jon Ransone is T48th after 36 holes, shooting 71-74=143 (+3). He posted a pair of birdies and a bogey on the front nine of the first round, and birdied 10 before bogeying Holes 15 and 16 to finish one over. Ransone had four bogeys and a birdie in the first nine of the second round, and added another bogey on 15. He bounced back with a birdie on 16 and finished the second round even par.
Starting on Hole 4, Max Sear birdied the eighth hole but registered four consecutive birdies on the back nine. He rebounded with a birdie on the 17th hole, but faltered with a bogey on the 18th and finished the round three over par with a score of 74. He struggled in the second round, carding a 76 for four over to finish with a total score of 150 (+8), putting him in 81st place.
Tae Wan Lee rounded out the team competitors for the Mountaineers, shooting 79-73=152 (+10) for 88th place. Lee, who birdied three holes and bogeyed seven in the first round, shaved six strokes off his score in the second round. He double-bogeyed two holes but added a pair of birdies to finish two over par.
Playing as an individual, Mason Short carded a score of 72-73=145 (+3) to tie Ransone for 48th place. In the first round, he bogeyed the fourth hole and double-bogeyed the seventh but redeemed himself with a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish one over par. Short posted three bogeys and a birdie on the front nine of the second round, and added two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to finish two over in the round and three over on the day.
