MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 12-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team closed its exhibition season with a 3-2 loss at No. 25 Georgetown this evening in a 100-minute match at Shaw Field, in Washington, D.C.
Down 3-0 after 80 minutes of action, the Mountaineers mounted a comeback in the final 20 minutes but came up short.
“It’s always good to play an opponent like Georgetown during the exhibition season so we can pinpoint the areas we need to improve,” said Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “I look forward to getting this team back on the practice field and continuing our preparation for our 2015 season opener.”
Two of the Mountaineers’ three transfers tallied goals this evening, with junior forward Aaran Parry scoring in the 88th minute and sophomore forward Kayla Saager finishing her chance in the 92nd minute.
WVU finished with nine shots on-goal, with senior forward Kailey Utley registering a team-best three.
Senior Hannah Steadman and sophomore Michelle Newhouse split time in net. The WVU defense forced the Hoyas offside seven times.
The Mountaineers conclude their 2015 preseason camp Sunday. WVU opens its regular-season slate at the Indiana Tournament next weekend. The squad will face SIUE on Friday, Aug. 21, at 4:30 p.m., and No. 13 Virginia Tech on Sunday, Aug. 23, at noon. Both matches will kick from Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana.
